Should be taught in all schools. It documents the special ongoing oppression of black women by rape. They grew up knowing their bodies were not their own but the property of any passing white. This book documents the courage with which they fought back against overwhelming odds to report these crimes and receive legal justice and the ongoing failure of state and federal powers to take steps. The bus boycott was organized and led by women against a system where bus drivers were free to beat them and sexually harass them. Many were beaten and raped and lost their jobs but in the face of death did not give up. The crimes detailed here are horrid to read but the courage of the women and men who protested should not be forgotten. The book has a lot of footnotes and a long bibliography for those who want to read more and she has interviewed many who took part. Others have pointed that Rosa Parks was an active freedom fighter and that other women had been protesting bus unequal practices. It is well written and very readable. Mike Ditka football player who just stated there has been no oppression in 100 yrs should be forced to read this. If he is going to make stupid statements he should know his facts.

I want to tell every white person to read this book. To read it all the way through and then sit down and think about it. Take notes. Think about it some more. Sexual violence is often used as a weapon in war, we have seen many examples of this in the past and in the present, but the extent of its use in the US, and how it was constantly disregarded by the authorities, or even used against victims, is abhorrent. But these stories must be told because they should never be erased and forgotten.In addition to being a huge minefield of information, events, and facts that are not taught in history books, this book is an important reminder of how black women’s voices have been consistently erased through time. Their overwhelming role in the Montgomery bus boycott reduced to a mere footnote, the tireless activism years and years before the civil rights movement took off stuffed away in the vaults of an archive, and the work that they continue to do on a daily basis forgotten. There is so much important information in this book, sometimes it actually feels overwhelming and frustrating at the same time because it really should be common knowledge.I initially got this one from the library, but I bought a copy for myself as I feel like I only scratched the surface by reading it once and need to be able to refer back to it again and again. Can we add this book to the curriculum please? My kids will be asked to read it as soon as they are old enough to.

This was an excellent book. I read it for a Women's Studies course and am so glad I did. It is a hard read at times due to the subject matter and I got chills over and over with every page I turned. This is a dense read so full of information, facts, and, the best part in my opinion, stories that hit you straight in your emotions (I am not ashamed to admit I got a little teary eyed at times). The Civil Rights Movement in the US is definitely taken for granted and has been whittled down to little bites of history where MLK Jr. is glorified and positioned as the center piece but if you read this book you'll learn there was so so much more to it and that once again history bears its burden on the backs of so many brave black women.

If you thought that the Civil Rights Movement began in the 1950's or 1960's, that Rosa Parks was a reticent old woman with tired feet, that the movement started suddenly after her refusal to move from her seat on a bus, I urge you to read this. You'll learn:- that Rosa Parks was raised a Garveyite, and had been an activist and NAACP leader for more than 20 years when she famously refused to move from her seat,- that this very seat was located on a bus whose driver had (less famously) harassed Ms. Parks 10 years before, and that she also knew E.D. Nixon was searching for a victim of racial violence who was "beyond reproach" to gain national media attention,and SO much more!I should add that I usually find history books a little boring, but this was very readable...

Seriously. Out of all of the history books that i read in high school and in the libraries, this was the only one that actually CLICKED for me. The rampant rape of black women throughout slavery and the Jim Crow Era has always been ignored or quickly dismissed in historical books before but this great author made sure to NOT do that! I love her for that! This book needs to be made into a movie one day! This will be the first time where our stories will be told thoroughly.I watched The Help, and it failed to mention the sexual assaults and rapes that the black women suffered. Although i enjoyed the movie somewhat, i was still disappointed because they refused to let our REAL stories get told. You can't have a good story set in the Jim Crow era without telling the rampant rapes of black women by white men and other men. It's part of our history. Whether many people want to admit it or not!

The lunch crowd was already dwindling by the time she got to the Bobcat Creek Cafe, but there was still a hum of friendly chatter as she pushed through the door. Her little sister Brandi looked up from the couple she was waiting on waved her towards an empty booth in her section with a happy little smile. Kelsey took two steps towards the booth and stopped cold.

Jack Thompson sat in a corner booth with the remains of an enchilada lunch special before him. Across the table from him Carol June Hinks tossed her blonde curls and laughed at something he said, eyes sparkling as she hung on every word out of his mouth. After a moment she reached out and lightly touched the back of Jack's hand with her fingertips, and his lips twitched into that lopsided smile that made Kelsey's heart lurch.

Not Carol June. No. Oh, no.

Before she knew what she was doing Kelsey had spun and slammed through the cafe door, headed for her car. Hurt and anger made her fumble her key a couple of times before she could get it into the ignition, but then the engine came alive and she peeled out of the parking lot and sped out of town and onto the lonely highway twisting up into the hills. Bitter tears blurred her eyes and she kicked herself for letting herself feel anything for a man who had obviously only been interested in one thing and had moved on already. It was silly, she knew. Their only connection was through sin, and no good could come of that. But he had made her feel so incredible that somehow in the back of her mind she couldn't help but think there had been something there between them, that he at least wanted her enough to come back for more instead of chasing after that little slut Carol June.

That was the real blow to her pride. She could handle being dumped, but being dumped for Carol June?

It took ten minutes for Jack to catch up to her. Once again flashing red and blue lights lit up her rear view mirror as he raced up the narrow highway behind her. For a second she considered ignoring him just to see what he would do, but then with a word that would have made her daddy gasp she pulled over onto the shoulder. The car had barely stopped moving when she yanked the door open and stormed out.

Jack's car slid in behind hers and he jumped out to meet her.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Kelsey?"

"What the hell are you doing having lunch with that little tramp Carol June?" she demanded in reply.

He took a step backwards, thrown off by her anger. "What do you care who I have lunch with?"

Her eyes flashed, and then she shook her head and looked away so he couldn't see the tears. "Men," she spat, and turned on her heel to go back to her car. "Leave me alone, Jack. Just leave me alone. Go back to Carol June."

A big hand closed on her elbow and spun her around. The deputy looked down at her with a perplexed frown. "I thought you wanted me to leave you alone. You've been avoiding me every time you saw me. Church, the ball games. You wouldn't even look at me."

"Well, what do you expect?" she shot back. "It's not exactly like you were courting me or something. What would my daddy and sisters think if they saw us? What could I say? 'No, Daddy, we're not dating. We just fuck on the side of the road now and then.'"

Jack's eyes twinkled and his lips twitched as his arms went around her and pulled her against him. "Don't forget about at my house."

She pushed against him, but she couldn't budge those arms. "Let me go!"

Lips nuzzled against her ear. "Is that really what you want, Kelsey? You want me to let you go?"

The Artifact Vault delves into the creative genius of the visual artists and production designers of the Harry Potter series. This book covers the exhaustive and stealth like work of procuring real-life brooms, owl cages and fabrics and designing each wizarding artifact. Chapter 6: Publications is my favorite chapter. Graphic designers Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima are brilliant! Fun facts about the publications include: The headline about the Weasley's trip to Egypt was designed in the form of a pyramid, Rita Skeeter's story about Harry and the Tri-wizard Cup was designed within the outline of the Cup and the newspapers as well as Marauder's Map were dyed using coffee. I would have loved if copies of The Daily Prophet and Wanted Posters were included.

I own all of the Harry Potter Vault series and they are each worth every penny spent. THE ARTIFACT VAULT provides fans and anyone who is interested in the films and books a closer look into the conceptualization of many of the amazing, magical and non-magical objects of the Harry Potter world as depicted in the stories and how these objects were designed for use in the films. These include early concept art, illustrations, behind-the-scenes photos and many more.If like me, you are a devoted fan that just loves all things Potter, you will delight in the many tidbits of information about the process in which these artifacts were brought to the screen. For example, Ravena Ravenclaw's diadem went through several iterations before it finally made it to the big screen in its present form (one of my favorite Horcruxes btw), and the Resurrection Stone too had to be re-imagined in order to remain faithful to author J.K. Rowling's conceptualization.There is so much material here to delight fans - I had always wanted to see close-ups of the paintings decorating Hogwarts Castle and here you get to see many of them with detailed explanations. That's the beauty of this book - you can just peruse the photos if that's your thing, or you can devour every morsel of information, like me. Thanks to Jody Revenson and the publisher for delivering a winner once again!

Every frame is rich with meticulous detail, and the wizarding world allows for some unique design elements."Harry Potter: The Artifact Vault" contains just about everything you'd want to see close up from the films. If you are interested in production design, set decoration, or similar aspects of filmmaking then you've got to see this book for yourself. As a Harry Potter fan, I was already quite familiar with how much effort went into designing the films - but the book has so many different artifacts in such great detail that it's impossible not to be impressed.All the important artifacts central to the story are here: everything from Harry's Hogwarts acceptance letter to the the three Deathly Hallows. But you also get to see background items that aren't necessarily central to the films, but nonetheless help to further immerse the viewer in the magical world. Examples include the paintings in the halls of Hogwarts, potion collections, and the food at the Yule Ball feast. Everything is printed here in great detail for your inspection.The most common type of imagery are pictures of the artifacts themselves; although there is also plenty of concept art, storyboards, etc. The team at Harper Design did an excellent job assembling and publishing this book. I already have A Guide to the Graphic Arts Department from the Stage to Screen Collector's edition and this book reminds me of that. Of course they're two completely different books, but what I really like about this book is that it gives you a close up look at certain newspaper ads and other things from the films while also giving you a description of each "artifact". I also really like the bonus insert of the Black family Tapestry from the films.

If you love the Harry Potter movies, you will love this book. It is an amazingly detailed look at what went into the costumes and props of the movies (all through the series). It takes you from the concept sketches to the final product - and it is interesting to see how costumes, and props - such as the Monster Book of Monsters - evolved from the original sketch to what was seen in the movies.The details about each characters' wand was incredibly interesting. The added removable props were interesting, but not the main point of the book. There is a small booklet style Tales of Beedle the Bard printed in runes, and then poster of the Black Family Tree that hangs in 12 Grimmauld Place. The poster is nicely detailed, but had to be folded to put in the book, making display less attractive.

I don't know much about Harry Potter but for $20, I had to jump on it. She loves it and shares it with her friends. She'll scan it from time to time when she's bored since there's endless content.

Engrossing behind the scenes discussion of the films, with the designers' attention to detail brought out and many bits of info unavailable elsewhere; really enjoyed it.

I am a big fan of Harry Potter and collecting all their collections. Love it. A must for all Harry Potter fans. It contains information that was not in the movie and the books. Worth buying.
