A fuzzy control system is a control system based on fuzzy logic, which is a mathematical system that makes decisions using human reasoning processes. This book presents an introductory-level exposure to two of the principal uses for fuzzy logic—identification and control. Drawn from the author's lectures presented in a graduate-level course over the past decade, this volume serves as a holistically suitable single text for a fuzzy control course, compiling the information often found in several different books on the subject into one.

Starting with explanations of fuzzy logic, fuzzy control, and adaptive fuzzy control, the book introduces the concept of expert knowledge, which is the basis for much of fuzzy control. From there, the author covers:

• Basic concepts of fuzzy sets such as membership functions, universe of discourse, linguistic variables, linguistic values, support, a-cut, and convexity

• Both Mamdani and Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems, showing how an effective controller can be designed for many complex nonlinear systems without mathematical models or knowledge of control theory while also suggesting several approaches to modeling of complex engineering systems with unknown models

• How PID controllers can be made fuzzy and why this is useful

• Position-form and incremental-form fuzzy controllers

• How nonlinear systems can be modeled as fuzzy systems in several forms

• How fuzzy tracking control and model reference control can be realized for nonlinear systems using parallel distributed techniques

• The estimation of nonlinear systems using the batch least squares, recursive least squares, and gradient methods

• The creation of direct and indirect adaptive fuzzy controllers

About the Author
John H. Lilly, PhD, is a professor in the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville. His research interests are nonlinear and adaptive control, fuzzy identification and control, positive/negative fuzzy systems, pneumatic muscle actuators, and robotics. In addition to his twenty-eight years of teaching experience, Dr. Lilly has written more than fifty refereed journal and conference articles, book chapters, invited scholarly lectures, and seminars.

These issues include well completions and the extremely important well-to-reservoir (and fracture) connectivity. Moving onwards, two chapters address the materials for fracturing: fluids and proppants. Their appropriate selection is essential to the successful execution of any treatment. Michael J. Economides is a professor at the Cullen College of Engineering, University of Houston, and the managing partner of a petroleum engineering and petroleum strategy consulting firm. His interests include petroleum production and petroleum management with a particular emphasis on natural gas, natural gas transportation, LNG, CNG and processing; advances in process design of very complex operations, and economics and geopolitics. He is also the editor-in-chief of the Energy Tribune. Previously he was the Samuel R. Noble Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University and served as chief scientist of the Global Petroleum Research Institute (GPRI). Prior to joining the faculty at Texas A&M University, Economides was director of the Institute of Drilling and Production at the Leoben Mining University in Austria. Before that, he worked in a variety of senior technical and managerial positions with a major petroleum services company. Publications include authoring or co-authoring 14 professional textbooks and books, including The Color Of Oil, and more than 200 journal papers and articles. Economides does a wide range of industrial consulting, including major retainers by national oil companies at the country level and by Fortune 500 companies. He has had professional activities in over 70 countries. Tony Martin is business development manager for international stimulation at BJ Services Company. Since graduating from Imperial College, London, with an honors degree in mechanical engineering and a master's degree in petroleum engineering, Martin has spent 17 years in the oil industry and has completed engineering assignments around the world. Martin's primary interest has been hydraulic fracturing and stimulation, and he has been involved in production enhancement projects in more than 25 countries. He teaches fracturing, acidizing and sand control both in-house and externally. A constant theme in this teaching is the need to de-mystify the world of hydraulic fracturing, in an attempt to make the process more accessible and less intimidating. The second half of the book dealing with pure cryptographic topics seems to have been written in a different style which made the book very attractive as a read - very informative and educational and so a great set of chapters to read (Chapters 4 and 5). The book is worth the purchase for those chapters alone. Chapters 1-3 had good parts and bad parts, there was some good educational material in there but it was really spoilt by stabs at competing vendors needlessly. Honestly Id rather not have read those parts because they had less to do with the technical and more to do with marketing and competitive advertising in them. In summary Id would buy the book for chapters 4 and 5.There is a very minor nit in that when I read the book in the amazon previewer it was in color - the actual book in paper form is rather less than flattering black and white with grey scale which really ruins the reading experience. I do like the illustrations and they were done with some obvious love and care and are worth looking at during the reading experience in color - they enhance the experience in my humble opinion.

99% of all processors don't run Windows or Unix - they're the embedded processors in your sewing machine, computer keyboard, thermostat, or car airbags. Even so, 99% of all operating systems books focus on big OSs like those, with little mention of the embedded and real-time OSs that surround us. Likewise 99% of all computer security books focus on big OSs like those. Attackers aren't so narrow-minded, though, and demonstrated by Mirai and Stuxnet.This book does an outstanding job of widening the focus of computing security. It emphasizes the safety-criticality of some embedded systems, like the ones in an insulin pump or anti-lock brake system - the kind of systems that can kill people if they misbehave (or are maliciously directed to misbehave). Although this book stresses resistance to attack, authorization, and information release, a very large part of this discussion talks about program correctness. That certainly makes sense, becauseA) so many attacks enter systems through buggy software, like buffer over-run vulnerabilities, andB) if a bug is when a program behaves in ways that violate specifications (even implicit ones), behavior of a compromised system is certainly a bug.I've found a few things to disagree with, except for one blooper (below). Admittedly, many embedded developers will find material here outside of their needs. Well, "embedded systems" cover a very large range, so that's hardly a surprise. I recommend this for its breadth, and for its attention to details of RTOS behavior that other books skip over. Truly, a valuable resource.The only conspicuous blooper I found was on p.252, regarding ring oscillators built from chains of "not" gates. Fig 4.29 shows a ring [so-called] oscillator built from two "not" gates. I think the usual name for this circuit is a 'latch'. Ring oscillators oscillate with odd numbers of not/nand gates. An even number of not/nand gates will sit quietly and happily with an exact alternation of 1 and 0 outputs, all the way down to the n=2 case. N=2 is called a static RAM cell.Outside of that, and outside of material beyond my current interests, it's all good.-- wiredweird

I have been designing and implementing security products for about 7+ years now (embedded systems for 12yrs) to "high assurance" standards and I have to say these authors have done a great job with this book. I usually don't like to buy books that have not been heavily rated yet, but with security books you don't want a 10 year old book (unless maybe it is cryptography!) if you want something that is relevant. That is why I am taking the time to rate this book. I encourage anyone considering this book to buy it right now. The issues and technologies are relevant and the authors have done a great job putting this together. I am very experienced in this area, but I think it is a pretty easy read... that being said I have only got through the first three chapters so far so I will update this if I change my mind!UPDATE: I finished this book about a week ago and I still recommend it. However I will say it is a bit slanted toward Green Hills... probably has to do with the author's close relationship with them! (I'll let you look it up). So read with that in mind. You see a similar slant/sales job in the model driven design (MDD) section that was written by another person with a company that sells a tool for MDD. I would say read the content and get out the security concepts without taking too much stock in how it may reflect on a competiting vendor products.I also want to add that as far as the "Embedded Cryptography" section of the book... it is nice to have in the book but if you want to learn about cryptography there are much better sources out there. This book isn't meant to just be a source for crypto so it makes sense but just want to make the readers aware. Some suggestions for a starter book that is "Applied Cryptography" by Schenier. Another great book that includes the mathematical basis is "Understanding Cryptorgraphy" by Paar and Pelzl. The nice thing about "Understanding Cryptorgraphy" is it doesn't require you to delve into the math but makes it available. So it is suitable for a novice and the experienced. There are also follow on books like "Practical Cryptography" by Ferguson and Scheneir that are really good, but I would suggest reading this one after one of the other two mentioned above. If you like a bit of history (which I don't generally, but really liked this book anyway) I also suggest "The Code Book" which is different from the former two in that it reads more like a story of crypto and its evolution with interesting insight on how ciphers have been broken and how new ciphers have been developed as opposed to just a focus on explanation of modern types of ciphers and specific cipher algorithms. Another book by Kahn call "The Codebreakers" has a lot of crypto history but the book is HUGE and, in my opinion, boring. I didn't get too far into "The Codebreakers" before I gave it away!

I had such high hopes for this book based on the fact that sooooo many people I follow on Instagram rave about it. It's good, but it's also got some problems--at least if you're a budget-conscious shopper.The good:1. The pictures are beautiful, and that's great since most of the people checking out this book are likely more interested in design inspiration than lifestyle philosophy.There are many ideas to be gained from seeing the way other folks combine patterns, for instance.2. The projects at the end of each section are the best part of the book, IMO. They are super cute, clearly explained and, for the most part, pretty easy.3. Lots of wealthy people featured in this book (see below), but occasionally there's a middle school teacher or some such thing, and those are the best parts of the book for those of us who don't live in the lap of luxury.The not great:1. This is the WORST part of the book. There's some cognitive dissonance between the way the writer describes early bohemians who lived the way they lived because of a lack of income and the "bohemians" in this book, who are clearly not what I would call "broke." What I want to know is how a single mom with only $200 (or less) a month of disposable income is able to decorate her home in bohemian fashion, not how a couple of trust fund kids living in Portland or a cosmetics brand mogul in LA are able to style their homes. The latter is not bohemian--it's folks who can afford to spend a lot of money decorating. It's what I call bourgie-boheme, AT BEST. These people are not the parallels of those south-of-France bohemians described in the front pages of the book.2. This is related to the first con. My New Bohemians came right n tme. This book is not just for creative singles, couples and families with kids. It's also inspirational for us seniors. With all the kids grown and gone We are downsizing from a wonderful funky old tumble down house to a smaller kinda sterile condo. Next week. The new bohemians came right on time to inspire me (and even spouse) to take "us" with us, to make the place our own with color and plants, textiles and textures...to take the old worn leather sofa whose every stain comes with a story, and to spark the sterile with DIY bling. Even old bohemians can be reignited by this new bohemians book. Blakeney is a genius, and Dabitos fotos are super inviting. Justina's descriptions are a joy to read, and easy Adopt an idea notions give all of us hope, at every stage of life.

Wow, what a gorgeous book. The description says author Blakeney features her favorite homes from "across the country"...but really most of the homes are in California and New York, with a small handful from Oregon, Texas, and New Mexico. No matter, though, because all of the homes here are phenomenal.The book is divided into six parts, each part covering a different bohemian style: modern, earthy, folksy, nomadic, romantic, and maximal. But, really, all the homes have a lot in common. They are playful, colorful, whimsical, and chock full of personality. Some lean toward minimalism and others are stuffed to the gills, but I loved each and every one. It helps, too, that the book quality and photo spreads are stunning--really vibrant and inspirational. (After reading this book, I've decided our house needs about twice the number of plants it currently has...)But I especially love how this book made me feel affirmed in our decision to decorate, furnish, and design our new home slowly. It takes time to build layers that are meaningful and reflect who we are. Sometimes I feel pressure to rush that process, since, hello, after a year in this house, we still don't have a coffee table in our living room... But now I'm feeling a little bit more calm and confident. I'm glad we are taking our time to find pieces that we love.At any rate, I loved this book. It is beautiful to look at and helpful to read. I know I'll be returning to it again and again.

This book takes me back to the 70s...when I was young and decorating my first apartment! It was a time of the "hippie" generation and I recall plenty of color, plants, wicker and casual comfort. I had very limited funds back then and this bohemian style was easy to achieve on a budget. It would still be a great way to decorate without breaking the bank. I have more money to spend on home decor these days, but I still love this look and have mixed it in with more pricey pieces...it really makes my house less serious and more fun for me and everyone that visits. This book is chock full of quirky, fun ideas that will lead open minded people to mix things up a little bit. This look is great if you love flea markets, auctions or estate sales. It also gives the collector plenty of ideas to creatively display their treasures. I can't recommend this book enough...this is one that I will display prominently on my coffee table and refer to often. So glad I purchased this...it was money well spent!
